What instigated the spanish civil war?

On the night of 17 July 1936, the Spanish army, inspired most of all by General Franco, started the Spanish Civil War by rebelling against the Second Republic. A central goal of the rebels was the destruction of left-wing organisations. The Spanish Civil War continues to shape people’s lives.

What happened in the spanish civil war?

In the 1930s, Spain was a deeply divided country that was politically torn between right-wing Nationalist and left-wing Republican parties. The Nationalist party was made up of monarchists, landowners, employers, the Roman Catholic Church and the army. The Republicans consisted of the workers, the trade unions, socialists and peasants.

Economically, the country had been deeply hit by the Great Depression after the Wall Street Crash. Partly due to this turmoil, in 1929 the military dictatorship that had ruled Spain since 1923 collapsed. In 1931 the King abdicated after the Republicans came to power. Within the 3 years of war during 1936 to 1939 over 300, 000+ people had lost their lives. The ruling party, the popular front was made up of republicans that believed in policies that did not favor extremes.

There followed a period where the two political rivals had periods in power as the elected government. The country was so divided and unstable that in 1936 the army rebelled and forcibly removed the Republicans from power. Civil war ensued

What was the outcome?

With the Republican cause all but lost, its leaders attempted to negotiate a peace, but Franco refused. On March 28, 1939, the victorious Nationalists entered Madrid in triumph, and the Spanish Civil War came to an end. Up to a million lives were lost in the conflict, the most devastating in Spanish history.

During the Spanish civil war there were poster made by both parties and these were largely used for propaganda to promote ideas of one party and to discredit the other parties involved. There were more posters made by the opposite party to weaken the morale of the other party’s troops. Poster design was not only used for propaganda, to either persuade the public’s interest in one’s favor, and to alienate opponents, but also for recruitment purposes. Here is example of one of the posters used during the war:
