Avenir digital Emphera Improvement

I have worked back into my avenir digital emphera and changed part to make it more readable and stand out better.

This here is my original Emphera but after feedback and looking at it again later on in the year i realise now that the written with the chrchter underneath is a bit much with the different shades so I have changed these all to now shade that is lighter making the writing easier to read. I have also played around with how many shadows of the V I need and I think it looks better with just the two.

There was feed back that said the 1988 looked to much so I have removed the backing 1988 and just stuck with the normal black writing.

I feel this looks a lot more readable and more structured. I feel that the 1988 still need work because it looks very alone and away from everything else. With more rearranging I decided to keep the 1988 all on one line and centre it in the middle of the V so there was equal white space around it. I feel this reads better and doesn’t over power everything else like the original one.

Type Specimen Feedback

Today we presented our Type specimen to the class and we in pair gave one another 3 good points on the poster and one thing to improve. Overall my feedback was positive i was told it was easy to read and clearly showed the type name in a creative way. The things to improve which now pointed out make perfect sense is to take the grey scale 1988 away as it distracts away from the overall poster. It was also said that i should lighten some of the character to make the text stand out more.

On the left I went back into indesign and took the advice I was given to see how it looks. I agree with the lighting of the characters I think works better. I think personally the 1988 works better in the image on the left . I feel it looks lost and almost floating in the image on the Right.

I will defiantly consider other way of placing the 1988 so it doesn’t take away from the layout and the title of the poster.

Type Specimen Design Process

I have finished my research for my Type specimen and from the designs I have done on illustrated I asked my family and friends which design they think I should take further. My three designs were all very different I have looked into using all three but I think that design 1 and 2 are a little out there and don’t work with the style of type.

I have taken design 3 on to Indesign I first did the title Avenir on illustrated and copied it over in to indesign. I then went back in to Illustrator to do the Alphabet that was going in to the ‘V’. Here shows me putting the alphabet into the V and trying to arrange the letter with even spacing. I found this difficult but I kept with it and went on to add the rest.

From here I kept to my simple design and added my body copy and used the column to space the text evenly. I put each paragraph over two columns which worked well and was easy to read.

Here show my idea i created in illustrator I knew this was the design I wanted to stick with but at the moment I feel like this design is to simple and has too much white space and doesn’t show off the type enough.

So from my first idea I added the date the type was designed to show off the numbers in this type. I used bigger numbers in the background to make the type look more interesting. I also think it works well because the V has the same overlap. I still felt it looked very plain toward the bottom underneath the text.

Here I then started playing around with over lapping and changing opacity of the grey shades. I wanted to use the same character size but overlapping them in different ways. I felt it was coming together but it wasn’t all align correctly.

From here I had three idea come from one I had added to the simple design. I then printed each design off because I wanted to see which one worked the best which grabbed the eye the most. I decided that in the image below the one on the right hand side show the font avenger off the most and grabbed the attention of the reader.

Process of Type Specimen

Once I knew this was my final idea I wanted to sit down and looked at what need tweaking to make it look better.  I knew that the letter in the V were out of line and had big gaps in-between. The LG logo also felt to big and was the first thing you looked at so I’m going to make it smaller and move it to the bottom right hand corner. I also need to remove the Hyphenation. I also wanted to see if changing the weight of the capital letter in the V would make it look more eye catching.

For my final design I completely changed the letters in the V and used Heavy for all the Capital letters and used light for all the lower case letters I also made sure there was equal spacing between each letters and made it as V shape as I could. Overall it looked much better and showed off the type a lot more.  I also change the hyphenation of my paragraphs and slightly lowered each one to allow it to read better. I also used 3 different percentage of opacity for the character going under the many body type. I used a mixture of 40%,20% and 10% opacity for each character. I then used this for each of the V in Avenir and overlapped them.

Type Specimen Designs

I have been doing research into existing typography poster to look at there layout to get inspiration for my type specimen layout. Here shows how I drew out there layout to show how simple every layout is.

From here I then looked at existing type specimen, I firstly looked at  Avenir and the decided to look at all type specimen out there to get idea for my own designs.

I printed 5 images of and then labelled the anatomy of a typeface. I looked at there layout and how everything was displayed together to give me ideas on how I could do with mine.

From here I went away and did ruff sketches of the layout and where everything would be placed. I played around with a few ideas and I took a couple future by change bits around .

I like some layouts more than other my original idea was to use the V in Avenir as a place to but my alphabet in. I then played with this idea a few time I also tried it with letter that are significant to that typeface.

I then took some ideas on to illustrator just to play around with the layout and design to see it on a screen before I take my final design on to indesign.

I have looked at all three of these designs and I like each one for different reasons. Each one works in its own way so I need to go back and look at how i can make one of them better than its original design.

Type Specimen- Research

My typeface is Avenir. I am creating a type specimen for this font and I need to research the Historical insight into the designer of the typeface. I also wanted to find information on the design it’s self and why it was designed. I also wanted to find out where it was used in the real world.

I first looked into collecting typography posters to give me a idea of what’s already out there and how they have laid it out in a creative way.

All of these posters have different and interesting layout and all work out in different ways. I feel some of them work more than others. The black one for new Baskerville I think works the best because it has all the information needed but in a fun and exciting way. These five poster show how type can create an interesting design without using imagery the type explain the story without it.

I used these poster and sketched out there layout in my sketchbooks. This helped me to see that all of these posters have a very simple layout.

I then decided to look at existing type specimen, I first looked at Avenir type specimen to see what other have produced but I then thought if I look at all type specimen I will get a better understand and have more ideas for my own design.

I then went into my research of my paragraphs

Paragraph one – History

Avenir is geometric sans serif designs of the early part of the 20th century designed by  Adrian Frutiger. He used the look  of both the past and the future for inspiration. Frutiger wanted to  add a bit of organic humanism to the design to allow the Avenir from the rigid geometric overtones of the earlier designs. The design is based on Erbar and Futura. Compared to Futura, the x-height and the aperture are bigger. Designer Adrian Frutiger was a swiss typeface designer who was influenced by typography. He designed other font such as Universe and Fruitger.

Paragraph Two – Why it was designed?

The typeface got its name from the word “future,”. It has been called “the type of the future” this is because of its geometric look and modern shape. Avenir is the french translation and it is a sans-serif geometric typeface which has been inspired by the classic style of Futura (1927) and Erbar (1922). Avenir  original version had just three weights, when it became popular three more weights were introduced making it what it is today.  The type designer Akira Kobayashi used the typeface Avenir and reworked the entire font to fix digital display problems; they called it Avenir Next which has 24 fonts. The style of Avenir is considered to be geometric but Frutiger wanted it to have more of a organic feel to become more humanised, it has a lot of stylistics qualities of Futura but slightly varied weight on the strokes to bring it back it bit and make it less thick and blocky like the Futura’s letterforms. The style really doesn’t reflect the name because its modern and clean but there a humanisation of the style makes just enough of a difference for this font to be acceptable for body type. Avenir font uses horizontal tails on the Q, the G is squared of towards the end. The a is double story and the g is single story. The j and the y have curved rather than straight tails.

Paragraph three – Where it was used?

Avenir is normally found to be used for blocks of text and is used by variety of different companies such as dwell magazines, Scottish water and Lg electronics. A popular brand identity font used by the web search engine Alta Vista, the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, among others.
