More Magazine Research

A lot of my problem was with my front cover. I struggled to focus on one idea because I knew that this was the first page people would see and it needs to really sum up the whole magazine. Looking at these magazines front covers they have a powerful image but then it is cover with words that describe what is going on in the issue. The title of the magazine is bigger than everything else and the font choice really brings everything together.

These front cover felt a lot more like they were focusing on the image rather than the text and that is something I want to use within my front cover. I think this has really helped me to work on my front cover.

This was my front cover but looking at it now it feels very lost and dated. The text needed changing a lot because it felt dated and needed to feel more contemporary and link more to the inside of the magazine. This is all about street style so the front cover should show that off and celebrate it more this felt very overpowering and using too many examples in one front cover.

Screen Shot 2019-03-29 at 16.40.07This front cover I have changed the title font to a more contemporary feeling font that works a lot more with the inside of the magazine. I was told to maybe try a different colour but I’ve used this colour scheme throughout and I think it works really well. I think that the bottom text still needs a lot of work.

This is my up to date version of my front cover I have taken away everything surrounding the image to give the image more focus as I felt I wanted to celebrate the photography more. I work on the bottom of the text and felt that using boxes of colour over the image to make the text standout but keeping the colours the same with the colour scheme using within the magazine. I like this front cover a lot more than the other two it starting to feel more like a street style magazine. I think that my issue was that I was trying to be like every other magazine and mixing to many themes together. Scrapping them all and pulling it back to the basics really worked well for this front cover.

Magazine Layouts

I have looked into magazine double page spread to get a feel of what magazine are like and to get inspiration for our next project changing faces. I have looked at loads of spread and picked the 5 that stood out to me the most.

Elbow grease magazine

This double page spread I liked because it has used the space well and kept the colours simple. The image is simple and the image is a collage which makes it look messy and more arty which I like. The font use is bold for the title and easy to read and the body text is big enough to read. I also like the use of pink font for the first paragraph. Also the use of underline and boldness on the question shows the importance.

I chose this spread because it hasn’t used all the space which I like because its not overpowered with images. Also the use of red writing for all the text make it look more important. I don’t normally like overlay text on images but I feel in this case it does work well. I also like the bold quote on the right hand side. The way that they have used bold text for the question and started with an indent to separate the text and the question. I feel the images work well but could have filled the space more but the use of blank space works well.

This double page spread for the introduction  has used space well. I like the way that they have used a whole page for the work induction in a creative way. The alignment on the second page is well laid out. The use of boldness for the title and left aligning it in a margin on its own works really well. The use of bold letters for the question in the bottom right hand corner works well. They layout is simple but easy to follow. The picture also works well with the text in terms of alignment.

This magazine spread I chose because I love how creative and colourful it is. I also like how the layout and columns work well with the image. In the first page of the left hand side the use of right align text works well with the image and the text of food issue in the triangle works well and the font works well. The use of font works well with these images and when it bold really stands out. The use of numbers and separate underline section works really well. The yellow text box over the image works well making it look more creative.

This magazine spread is simplistic with a border around the spread and the quote in bold above works well showing the importance of the quote. The use of a drop cap in the text make it look more important I also like the way the text is split into two column but the top quote is going over the two in pink writing works well. I also like the use of an image on one whole page. The space around the border works really well because it doesn’t look overpowering.

I looked into this website to give me a idea of how I was going to go about my layout for my ephemera I looked at the colour screen to give me idea of what colour stock to use which seems to be black and yellow. I also research there social media so I could include this in my design .

Layout tutorial

For this morning tutorial we recapped on all the things we learnt about for indesign layout. This includes the layout of elements on a page that looks visually pleasing and reads correctly. Here are a few element to consider:

  • Symmetrical
  • Asymmetrical
  • A clear path for the eye
  • Hierarchy
  • Use of Grids, columns and margins
  • Text adjustments
  • Line length
  • Design system
  • Balance (between white space and design)

I think this was really useful to do before i start on indesign as it gave me the knowledge on what i needed to consider within my design and what I think works best to show off my design qualities.

Task 1: Word Block

Our first task was a word block task to look at leading, kerning, justification and rag and also looking at line length. We were given a paragraph and we had to cut and stick it down whilst considering all these things. It was hard to get even line spacing because the line were so small it wasn’t very accurate it was also hard to get the line lengths because of the word length were different every line.

fullsizeoutput_31a.jpegI feel that this help make me aware of how important it is to consider all these factors. I should use this a consider this when I go on to indesign for my booklet.

Task 2: Layout

For the second part of the workshop we looked at layout. Looking at different layout such as portrait and symmetrical, portrait and asymmetrical, landscape and symmetrical or landscape and asymmetrical. We had to create 3 layouts using magazine on a A4 piece of paper using a rectangular block of text, a heading and and image using a minimum of 3 elements and a maximum of 5 elements. img_0657I chose to do a portrait symmetrical layout which worked really well as i used a heading with the image underneath then the test below it again. I cut the peice  out and before I stuck them down I played around with the layout. img_0656

I then looked at a portrait asymmetrical layout which I think was more fun to do as I could play around with the layout more. It still had a system but it was easier to play around with different layout which I considered many before sticking it down.

My third layout was landscape asymmetrical which I felt once I stuck it down I felt it didn’t look very asymmetrical and didn’t look playful enough.

Task 3: Layout part two

This task followed on from the second task and for this one we got into pair and made note based on our layout and discussed which layout need more work. We had to pick out one of our design and in pair discuss what needed to be changed. My partner chose my landscape layout and said I needed to move the title and play around with it more as the title was very symmetrical.

Using the photocopy I made a copy and changed the layout like my partner said and i feel this tasked help on make me realise that you can play around with something more and change it a tiny bit to give it that little bit more of a better layout.

Magazine Layout

Friday 25th November

Here are many different layout to a magazine which I research in order to give me ideas for my layout. I wanted to see how they used the double page spread with the text and the image and how I could pay around with the layout depending on the image and text I am given to work with.

I have to design the entire layout including the front cover for my book and I would like mine to maybe include a contents page. I would like it to have a simple flowing layout with a constant theme flowing throughout.

The first one I like because of the numbers and the way they have used negative space to make it simple but effective.

I like this one because of the use of black and negative space and how the image look very effective on a black background. I also like the way they used the I for the contents as well as in THIS.

screen-shot-2016-11-27-at-18-33-07I like this one because of the colour and how they have used the double page well by filling one page with an image but keeping the other page simple but with enough detail.

I like the use of colour but I really like the layout using the text in the middle as the main place you look at and the the image behind that doesn’t over power the page.

I like this layout as it has a lot of of text but it is displayed in a way where it doesn’t look like a boring amount of text. I also love the colour with a little bit of yellow.

I think for my layout I would use the double page by having one page for the image and the other for that artist information. I will see what this look like when I play around with layout.

Front Cover

I like these front cover because they are simple but effective giving a clear image and clear title.  I like the simpleness of the image and title. I like the way they have all got a different filter on them .
